Show Me, Tell Me
Prepare for your practical driving test with the vehicle safety questions used by DVSA examiners.
How it works
In a car practical test, you’ll be asked two vehicle safety questions: one “tell me” question before you start driving and one “show me” question while driving.

How would you check the brakes before starting a journey?
Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Test them as you set off and check the vehicle does not pull to one side.
Where would you find recommended tyre pressures and how would you check them?
Use the manufacturer’s information and a reliable pressure gauge. Check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold and refit valve caps.
How would you check the head restraint is correctly adjusted?
The rigid part should be at least as high as your eyes or the top of your ears and as close to the back of your head as comfortable.
How would you check the tyres are safe and have sufficient tread?
Check for cuts and bulges and ensure at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters and around the full circumference.
How would you check headlights and tail lights are working?
Operate the switch, turning on the ignition if necessary, and explain that you would walk around the vehicle to check the lights.
How would you know if there was a problem with the ABS?
The ABS warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.
How would you check the direction indicators are working?
Operate the indicators or hazard warning switch and explain that you would check all indicators around the vehicle.
How would you check the brake lights are working?
Operate the brake pedal and use reflections in windows or doors, or ask someone to help.
How would you check power-assisted steering is working?
Gentle pressure on the steering wheel maintained while the engine starts should result in a slight noticeable movement as assistance operates.
How would you switch on the rear fog lights and explain when to use them?
Operate the switch and check the warning light. Explain when rear fog lights should be used according to the Highway Code.
How would you switch from dipped to main beam and know it is on?
Operate the control and check the main beam warning light.
How would you check engine oil, coolant or brake fluid levels?
Identify the correct dipstick or reservoir and explain how you would check the level against the manufacturer’s markings.

Show me how you switch on the dipped headlights.

Practise these questions during your lessons so the controls become familiar. During the “show me” question, always prioritise safe control of the vehicle.
